kissing of flutes
with a lack of true intimacy
waking Mika from her last dream of ‘07
a solitary shout of Happy New Year
echoed by text around the States

precious bedtimes stories
as I lay alongside three angels
“they have boobies on their cheeks”
heeeheeeeheeeehaahaaahaaaaaheheeheee
their bursting glee, so contagious
being held in heavenly innocence, such beauties;

akemashite omedeto” greetings heard downstairs
as eyes awaken to smell the new year
omochi (rice cakes)
nimono (traditional simmered vegetables)
ozoni (broth with those rice cakes)
kanpai (cheers)!
welcoming what is to come with our ancestors

serendipitous synchronicities
your honest inquiry wins two sold-out tickets
even at a discounted price
and on top of that, without a wait!
“this must be so illegal”
but we thank our stranger, amigo,
we greet with guiltless smiles

the oppressive heat is immediate
with visitors rubbing elbows like one of Dali’s parties
attracted mostly by his sur:realistic strokes,
elegantly dancing with my eyes
spellbound destino metamorphosis of narcissus
giraffes on fire eyes that gaze persistence of memory
preserved sketches, notes, and letters

close the night with
Wonder Boys
a film for writers, as we are,
writers who make choices,
consciously and constantly (I hope)

what a way to start my 2008
I wouldn’t have it any other way
